Hydroponic Lighting and HID Grow Lights
High Intensity Discharge HID grow lights include Metal Halide (MH) and High Pressure Sodium (HPS). MH HID grow lights, with blue-white spectrums, are efficient, long lasting and are preferred in the vegetative growth period of Hydroponics plants. Hydroponics plants grown under MH Hydroponic lights will exhibit increased leaf growth, and a strong stem and branch. HPS HID grow lights are also efficient, long lasting, and are used mainly for the blooming, flowering and produce yield stages of Hydroponics plant growth with their yellow-orange-red spectrums. A must for tomatoes!
Hydroponic lighting does get somewhat more complicated as your Hydroponics plants get to the blooming stage. Fluorescent Hydroponic lights will not generally give you the yield you are looking for, most MH Hydroponic lights do not have the yellow, orange and red spectrums required for the blooming and yield stage, and regular HPS Hydroponic lights do not have enough blue-white spectrums for the Hydroponics plants to maintain growth and health. Various solutions for Hydroponic lighting include:
-
Use HID grow lights and electronic digital grow ballasts to allow use of MH during the growing stage and HPS during the blooming stage of Hydroponics plants. You can also hang a compact fluorescent light during the blooming stage along with the HPS HID grow lights to continue the growth process, and control the heat.
- Use Conversion Metal Halide Hydroponic lights which can be used in HPS grow ballasts
- Update your grow ballast system to digital ballast electronic ballasts for MH and HPS Hydroponic lights and save money on energy at the same time
-
Update your Hydroponic lighting system to LED grow lights with red and blue spectrum, create no heat
Hydroponic lights have improved tremendously over the years, and there are so many great choices now that it is relatively easy to give your Hydroponics plants the perfect Hydroponic lighting conditions.
Hydroponics LED Grow Lights
LED Grow Lights have been improved so much over the past few years, with better, purer spectrums, better LEDs and better circuitry. There are so many advantages to upgrading your Hydroponic lights to LED grow lights, outlined on our Home Page under Purchasing Tips, LED Grow Lights.
The two biggest advantages in using LED grow lights for your Hydroponic lights are the energy savings you will realize, and LED grow lights have no heat build-up, better for your Hydroponics plants, will produce no heat signature, you will not have the heat to exhaust from your Hydroponics grow room. The only thing to exhaust will be the Hydroponics plant odor, which you can easily take care of with a Big Blue Ozone Generator.
